  4.  ARE THERE UPPITY WOMEN IN AUSTRALIA?

  6.  If you think about it, there's no real reason to believe
  7. that Australia doesn't have its share of uppity women,
  8. and sure enough, it does.  Female uppityness goes back a
  9. long way in the land down-under.  In fact, even writing
  10. about liberated women has a long and proud history; Sir
  11. Julius Vogel wrote a science fiction book there in 1889
  12. which describes a world in which the President of the
  13. United States is a woman and whose hero, Hilda Fitzherbert,
  14. is a female member of the Australian Parliament.  Hilda's
  15. bill to permit a woman to become Australian Emperor is
  16. vetoed by the emperor of the time, and the leader of the
  17. opposition, one Lord Reginald Paramatta, tries to kidnap
  18. and marry her AGAINST HER WILL.  Valiant Hilda eventually
  19. prevails, however.  She marries the Emperor instead, and
  20. he in turn withdraws his veto so that their daughter can
  21. become Emperor in her turn.  Sound familiar?  Maybe us
  22. male types should reconsider and emigrate instead to a
  23. safer place, maybe Cincinatti?
